Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order my Legion Cap?

The distinct headgear of the Legionnaire is called the Legion cap. The Legion cap is considered the official Legion uniform.  Post 243’s standard embroidery for their caps is:

          Right side has “243”

Left side has “Oviedo, FL” (referred to as post, city)

Front has the Orange (the state symbol)

Most members wear the regular crown cap with liner. We have heard recently that they run a bit large so if you’re between sizes, pick the smaller size. Female Legionnaires may wear any style cap. Click here to get more information about ordering your Legion cap or call (888) 453-4466.

There is additional information regarding cap protocol at the link above.  Here are some basics:

  •  The left side, with the Legion emblem, must always be facing up when placed on a flat surface.
  • The right side of the cap have membership badges or patches of position, military emblems, miniature medals and ribbons and other patriotic or Legion pins and devices. If a flag worn on this side, it must be the topmost pin.
  • During the National Anthem, a salute is rendered unless singing. If singing, remove the cap and place over your heart.
  • When reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, praying or remembering fallen comrades, remove the cap and place over your heart.

Where can I get a name tag?

For a Post created name tag, please see the Quartermaster.  Color Guard members use this name tag.

If you would prefer a standard American Legion name tag, Flag and Emblem Sales has many to choose from.  Click here to go to the page to enter your information to order the recommended tag.   You will order the blue, post level, name tag with your name on the first line, "Post 243" on the next line and "Oviedo, FL" on the bottom line.

Where can I get Legion apparel and items?

Post 243 does not keep any inventory on hand.  All items may be purchased through the American Legion's vendor, Flag & Emblem (a link is provided at the bottom of this page).  There are also a few magazines in the rack at the post for you to look through before you order.

What is the required uniform for Post 243?

We are a casual post and do not require full uniforms at our general meetings.  You will see many members simply wearing a Legion cap with their civilian attire.  The basic recommended uniform is dark slacks, socks and shoes; white Legion polo; and Legion cap.  We have several Post specific items (polos, windbreakers) available...see the Quartermaster to order yours.  For more formal occasions, we recommend a dress white shirt that can be purchased through Flag & Emblem, black slacks, and adding a navy blazer.

What military medals and ribbons may be worn on the uniform?

  • There is no federal law that describes the method of wearing military medals and decorations with civilian clothes. However, each of the military services has uniform regulations which cover this question.   Click here for your branch's guidance.
  • Campaign ribbons, medals, and official American Legion badges shall be worn three inches below the point of the shoulder and above the left breast pocket, centered; provided, however, that medals and ribbons are not to be worn together.
  • Badges of other fraternal organizations are not to be worn on uniforms except when attending functions of such organizations. No other badges or insignia are to be worn.

Where can I purchase a coffee mug to hang in the kitchen?

Please contact our Quartermaster for coffee mug orders.  To leave your mug at the Post, we offer a $1/month "rental" of a hook or counter space.  Yearly rentals are discounted to $10.

I want to become a member, what do I need to do?

We love welcoming new members to the American Legion Family.  You will need a copy of your DD-214 (showing type of discharge), a Post 243 Application filled out (see download below), and your first year's membership dues.  Post 243 has $60 annual membership dues, a portion of which goes to National and District headquarters.  The remainder is used for Post programs and food.  Contact our Membership Chair for more information.

I'm already a Legion member but want to transfer, what next?

Thank you for considering Oviedo Memorial Post 243 as your Legion home.  A simple Member Data Form (available below) needs to be filled out, signed and turned in to our Membership Chair.  Your membership status will be assessed to accept your transfer in to Post 243.

I'm interested in the combined Marine Corps League/American Legion Honor Guard/Rifle Team...
