Present flags or "colors" at ceremonies and presentations, such as parades, school events, and sporting events. Color guards may carry the American flag, POW/MIA flag, State flags, Legion flags, or flags from military branches, as well as Women's Auxiliary, SAL, and Jr. Auxiliary colors. A rifle escort often accompanies the American flag. Color guards are often veterans, but other members may also serve.
Present a contingent to bear honors at ceremonies and funerals. Honor guards may also present flags, escort or carry caskets, or act as bodyguards. Honor guards may include color guards, but color guard members may not be as trained in ceremonial actions and drills as honor guard members. Honor guards may be sworn members of a police department, retired or employed corrections officers, or other groups.
The team meets approximately twice a month. Wear long pants/jeans, closed toe shoes and casual Legion polo or Honor Guard t-shirt as directed by the Color Guard Commander. All are welcome to practices to see where they might fit in to the team.
To participate in events, the following uniform items are required:
You'll notice that our uniforms are not the standard American Legion Color Guard uniforms. This is because when we started, we did not have enough members for our own detail. We began as a combined team with the Marine Corps League (MCL). Our uniform was adjusted to blend with the current MCL Color Guard uniform.
We continue to provide details with the MCL as well as Legion only details. We have also been known to partner with other Color Guards in the area for special events.
